You can choose to study after 10 or 12 grades (duration of studies – 3 or 2 years).

The training programme is aimed at preparing qualified animal attendants. After completing this programme, animal attendants are able to provide care to pets, know the main requirements for animal outside appearance, know how to perform the procedures of animal fur care and hygiene, assist in choosing a pet, consult on the matters of animal keeping, care, use of inventory as well as welfare, to administer the first aid for pets, service the fairs and competitions of pets, be tolerant in communicating and cooperating with colleagues, clients, work in a team, to adapt flexibly to various labour market requirements.

Those who study under the training programme of animal attendant (state code 440062108), acquire the specialisation of animal grooming. Having acquired this specialisation, the specialist knows how to perform animal fur grooming and hygiene procedures, knows how to cut fur of dogs and cats of various breeds, prepares the animal’s coat for specialised events, selects the cosmetic means and products for the care of animal fur, consults the owners on the care of pet fur.

To pursue these aims, in theoretical courses, the future animal attendants are taught the basics of anatomy and physiology, veterinary, dog and cat breeding, breeding of exotic animals, dog training, organisation and servicing of animal-related events, basics of law, professional ethics, etc.

The practical training takes place in special places of practice according to the signed contracts. Duration of practical training – 1,560 hours. The apprenticeship is carried out at employers; duration of apprenticeship – 600 hours. The practical skills are solidified and improved during the apprenticeship.

The vocational readiness of the student, who passed the entire training programme, is demonstrated by the results of competency assessment examination which evaluates the competencies and general skills laid out in the curriculum. <0The composition of the commission of competency assessment examinations, organisation and the procedure of the issue of documents are regulated by the Ministry of Education and Science.

The qualification can be improved individually or by participating in internships or by continuing studies at the Aleksandras Stulginskis University, the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (the Veterinary Academy).

 

Description of qualification

The qualification of animal attendant is necessary in order to work as the animal attendant and consult people on the matters related to the care of their pets.

The person, who acquired the animal attendant’s qualification, shall:

  • be able to attend for pets at home, animal shelters, zoo’s or commercial companies;

  • select feedstuffs and feed pets;

  • carry out hygiene procedure, fix the animal;

  • prepare the pet for exhibition or competition;

  • service pet fairs and competitions;

  • help in choosing a pet;

  • consult on the matters of animal keeping, care, use of inventory;

  • analyse the laws regulating the animal attendance and welfare, consult the clients on the matters of animal attendance and welfare;

  • know the basics of animal outside appearance, the main breeding principles;

  • love the animals, be patient, tender and a communicative person.

Having acquired the qualification of animal attendant, the persons can work in veterinary hospitals, as assisting personnel of veterinary doctors, in pet shops, as consultants on animal breeding and care matters, in increasingly more popular small animal hotels, various animal care institutions, individually by concluding a contract with persons, consult them on the care of their pet.
